Garage Door Keypad Not Working? Practical Fixes to Try

When a garage door keypad is not working, the cause is usually a weak battery, the opener's lock feature or a keypad that has lost its programming. TrueFix Garage Doors troubleshoots these every week in Calgary, and most can be solved in minutes. If nothing helps, the opener's receiver or logic board may be at fault.

Start With a Simple Test

Before you change anything, narrow down where the problem is. Try three things:

  • The wall button inside the garage. If it doesn't work either, the issue is with the opener or its power, not the keypad.
  • A handheld remote or your car's built-in button. If remotes work but the keypad doesn't, the keypad itself is the likely culprit.
  • The keypad backlight. If the buttons don't light up when pressed, suspect the battery first.

This quick check saves a lot of guesswork and tells you which of the sections below to focus on.

Replace the Keypad Battery

Wireless keypads run on a small battery, and it is the most common reason they stop working. The cover usually slides down or flips up to reveal a battery compartment. Check the old battery's size and type, then replace it with a fresh one of the same kind.

Signs of a dying battery include a dim or flickering backlight, needing to press the buttons several times, or a keypad that works from close range one day and not at all the next. Batteries also lose strength in the cold, so a keypad that is fine in September can start failing in January. If you replace the battery and the keypad still won't respond, check for corrosion on the contacts and clean them gently with a dry cloth.

Check the Lock Feature on the Wall Control

Many openers have a lock or vacation button on the wall control inside the garage. When it is turned on, the opener ignores remotes and keypads, though the wall button usually still works. It is easy to switch on by accident while reaching for the light button, or a family member may have set it while you were away.

Look for a padlock symbol or a lock light flashing on the wall control. The way to turn it off varies by model, but on many units you press and hold the lock button for a few seconds until the light stops flashing. Your opener's manual will show the exact steps. Once the lock is off, try the keypad again.

Reprogramming the Keypad

Keypads sometimes lose their link to the opener after a power outage, a battery change or a new opener installation. Reprogramming usually follows the same general pattern, though the details depend on the brand and age of the opener:

  1. Find the learn button on the opener motor head. It is often under the light cover or near the antenna wire.
  2. Press and release the learn button. An indicator light will usually come on, which gives you a short window to finish the next step.
  3. At the keypad, enter the PIN you want to use and press the enter button.
  4. Watch for the opener light to blink or listen for a click, which confirms the code was accepted.
  5. Test the keypad from outside with the door clear of people and objects.

Pressing and holding the learn button for too long can erase every remote and keypad paired with the opener, so press it briefly. If your opener is older and the steps don't match, check the manual or ask us to help.

Cold Weather and Keypads

Calgary winters are tough on anything mounted outside. Besides draining batteries, the cold can make rubber buttons stiff and less responsive. Chinook swings bring melting and refreezing, so moisture can get into the keypad housing and freeze around the contacts.

If your keypad acts up only on very cold mornings, warm it with your hand for a minute and try again. Brush off snow and ice gently rather than chipping at it. Make sure the keypad cover closes fully, and check that the keypad is mounted where meltwater from the roof doesn't drip onto it. A keypad that has had water inside it more than once may be worth replacing.

When the Receiver or Logic Board Is the Problem

If the keypad and every remote stop working at the same time but the wall button still opens the door, the opener's receiver may not be picking up signals. Check that the antenna wire hanging from the motor head is straight and undamaged. Nearby electronics or new LED bulbs in the opener can sometimes interfere with the signal too.

If the wall button also fails, or the opener lights flash in an unusual pattern, the logic board may have failed. Power surges and age are common causes. This is where a technician should take over. Our opener repair starts from $180 labour plus parts, and if replacement makes more sense, new LiftMaster openers are installed from $689 plus GST. Your Questions, Answered

Why does my keypad light up but the door doesn't move?

The keypad has power but the opener isn't accepting its signal. Check the lock feature on the wall control, then try reprogramming.

Do I need to reprogram the keypad after a battery change?

Usually not, but some keypads lose their code. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, try reprogramming.

Why does my keypad stop working in winter?

Cold weakens batteries and stiffens buttons, and moisture can freeze inside the housing. A fresh battery often helps.
