How it works
Diagnosis
That bang was the spring shaft losing its counterbalance. New springs matched to the door weight go in, and the door is rebalanced before we leave.
A cable has broken or come off its drum. We replace both cables, check the brackets and drums, and level the door.
Usually a stripped drive gear. We replace the gear kit and fix the imbalance that wore it out.
The photo-eyes are blocked, dirty or misaligned, or the force setting has drifted. We realign and reset them.
We secure the door, realign the track for $180 and replace seized rollers so it does not happen again.
We fit a reinforcing strut or replace the hinge from stock, then check spring balance.
We replace the bottom weatherstrip at $8 per foot and adjust the door to seal evenly against the slab.
Buyer’s guide
A sectional garage door is a team of parts, and when one stops pulling its weight the others take the strain. The springs store enough energy to offset nearly all of the door’s weight. The cables carry that lifting force from the drums on the spring shaft down to the bottom corners. Rollers keep the sections in the tracks, hinges let each section fold around the curve, and the opener simply steers a door that is already balanced. Seals close the gaps at the floor and the jambs.
That chain of dependency is why a single worn part rarely fails alone. A tired spring makes the opener grind its gear. A seized roller twists a hinge until it cracks. When a frayed cable finally parts, the door tips sideways and the rollers on the low side come out of their rails. Good garage door repair finds the first link that broke, not just the most visible one, and that is how we diagnose every call.
| What you notice | Most likely part | Repair and price |
|---|---|---|
| Bang from the garage, door will not lift | Torsion spring | Spring replacement: $280 single, $480 pair |
| Door sits crooked, one side low | Lift cable or drum | Cable replacement: $240 |
| Motor runs, door stays put, or door reverses | Opener gear, board or photo-eyes | Opener repair: $180 labour + parts |
| Rollers outside the track, scraping noises | Track or rollers | Track realignment: $180 |
| Dents, a bowed top section, a cracked hinge | Panels or hinges | Panel & hinge repair: quoted on site |
| Snow, drafts or meltwater under the door | Weatherstripping | Weather seals: $8/ft bottom, $12/ft side |
Torsion springs wear by cycle count, and on most Calgary houses the originals were rated low. When one goes, the door suddenly weighs what it really weighs, often more than an adult can safely lift. We measure the old spring and the door, then fit 12,000-cycle springs wound to match, or higher-cycle upgrades if you would rather not see us again for a long while. On two-spring doors we recommend replacing both together, since the survivor has the same mileage.
Cables tend to fail from the bottom up, where salty slush from your tires sits against the bracket all winter. Our cable price covers both sides plus re-levelling the door, and we look hard at the bottom brackets and drums while the springs are unwound, because a rusted bracket will chew through a new cable. Both jobs carry stored spring energy that injures people every year, so they are strictly technician work.
We service chain, belt, screw-drive and wall-mount openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and the other common brands. The usual faults are a worn nylon drive gear, a start capacitor that gives up in the cold, a logic board cooked by a power surge, and photo-eyes pushed out of line. Before blaming the opener, we disconnect it and check the door’s balance by hand; a surprising share of “dead opener” calls are really spring calls. If the opener is past about 15 years, we will give you a repair price and a replacement price and let you choose.
Tracks are the steel rails your door rides in, and rollers are the small wheels that run inside them. Neither gets much attention until a roller pops out and the door hangs at an angle. When that happens, unplug the opener and leave the door alone; running it can fold the sections or bring the whole door down.
The trigger is usually one of a handful of things. A bumper nudges the bottom section and pushes the lower rollers out. A cable lets go and the door tips. Lag bolts holding the track brackets loosen in old framing, so the vertical track drifts away from the door. Steel rollers with seized bearings stop turning, skid instead, and climb the track lip. In winter, ice in the bottom of the track holds one side back while the opener pulls the other.
Where you live changes the odds. Back-lane garages in older inner-city neighbourhoods often have track brackets screwed into framing that has dried and shifted for decades, so loose hardware is the usual story. In newer suburbs the doors are heavier insulated 16x7 and 16x8 steel, so when one does leave the track there is more weight hanging off fewer rollers, and it needs securing quickly.
Track realignment is $180: we clamp the door, work the rollers back in, straighten a lightly kinked track or replace a creased one, then set the tracks plumb and at the right spacing. On older doors we often recommend quiet nylon rollers (10-pack from $140), which roll freely through a Calgary winter and take a lot of noise out of the door. See why rollers matter.
Panels and hinges. Summer hail and reversing cars account for most dented sections. A single section can often be swapped if a matching panel still exists for your door’s make and model; we check before you commit. Hinges crack quietly from years of flexing and are replaced on the spot from stock, with the correct numbered hinge at each joint so the door still closes tight.
Weather seals. The rubber along the bottom of the door hardens, splits and eventually freezes to the slab. Replacement is $8 per foot for the bottom seal and $12 per foot for the side and top stop, and it is one of the cheapest ways to keep snow, cold air and mice out of the garage.
Most broken garage doors should be repaired, and we say so. Replacement only earns its cost when most of the door is damaged and no matching panels exist, when rust has come through the bottom section, or when an old uninsulated door keeps a heated room above the garage cold. In those cases we will show you the cost of fixing it alongside a new door installation, so you are comparing real numbers rather than a sales pitch.

FAQ
It depends on the part. On our published list, a single spring is $280 and a pair $480, cables are $240, opener repair is $180 labour plus parts, track realignment is $180 and a tune-up is $149. Panel and hinge work is quoted on site. There is no call-out fee. Our repair cost guide explains what affects the price.
Often. A loud bang usually means a spring, a crooked door a cable, a humming opener a gear, and rollers outside the rails a track problem. Look, but do not touch springs, cables or bottom brackets. A photo helps us arrive with the right parts.
In most cases, yes. We are on site within 2 hours for most calls in the city, every day of the week. The exception is a damaged section that has to come from the manufacturer; until it arrives, the door is left secure and shut.
We fix the fault you called about and check the rest of the door during the free tune-up that comes with every completed repair. If we find something else, you get the price and decide; nothing extra is done without your approval.
Yes. Many detached garages in older neighbourhoods still have extension springs and single doors. We repair them, fit safety cables, and tell you honestly when a part is no longer worth replacing.
Yes. You receive a written warranty covering both the parts we install and our workmanship. The details are on our warranty page.
Call a technician if you hear a loud bang, see a gap in the spring above the door, or the door feels heavy, jerks or hangs crooked. Keep the door closed and do not touch the springs or cables. TrueFix Garage Doors diagnoses the whole door, gives a flat price first, and repairs most Calgary doors on the first visit.
A spring or cable replacement usually takes about an hour once the technician is on site; opener repairs and new opener installations take a little longer. Our trucks carry the common parts, so most jobs are finished in one visit.
Repair is usually the better value when the door is less than about 15 to 20 years old and the panels are sound. Replacement makes sense when several sections are damaged, the door is uninsulated or unsafe, or parts are discontinued. We tell you honestly which one is worth it before any work starts.
No. We work 7 days a week, 8 am to 8 pm, and the published prices are the same on Saturdays and Sundays. There is no call-out fee, no travel fee in our service area and no weekend surcharge.
