Most Doors Fixed the Same Day, on the First Visit

When your garage door quits on a weekday morning, you need it fixed — not scheduled for next week. TrueFix runs fully stocked trucks across all four quadrants, so most calls see a technician within 1–2 hours and most repairs are done in a single visit: springs, cables, tracks, rollers or the opener itself.

  • Residential garage doors. Attached and detached, single and double, every major brand.
  • Commercial repairs. Sectional overhead doors for shops, warehouses and parkades — see commercial service.
  • Overhead door systems. Springs, cables and openers diagnosed and balanced properly.

Homeowner’s guide

Garage door repair in Calgary: what actually breaks, and why

A garage door is the largest moving object in most homes. A typical 16×7 insulated steel door weighs 70 to 110 kg, and it’s lifted thousands of times a year by two springs, two cables and an opener. In Calgary, that system works harder than almost anywhere else in Canada — and it shows in what we fix every day.

Broken springs: the #1 garage door repair in Calgary

Broken torsion springs are the repair we make most often. Builder-grade springs are rated for roughly 10,000 open-close cycles, which is 7–10 years for a family using the garage as its front door. Cold is the trigger: when a Chinook drops away and the temperature falls from +10 °C to −25 °C overnight, the steel stiffens, the grease thickens, and a spring that was already near the end of its life snaps — often with a loud bang that sounds like something fell in the garage. If one spring on a two-spring door breaks, we replace both so they wear evenly and the door stays balanced.

(403) 667-9676

Cables, drums and bottom brackets

Lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door to drums on the spring shaft. Calgary’s road salt and spring meltwater sit at the bottom of the door all winter, rusting the bottom brackets and fraying cables from the bottom up. A frayed or snapped cable lets one side drop and the door jams crooked — and that’s also how most doors end up off their tracks.

(403) 667-9676

Openers that hum, click or reverse

When the opener runs but the door doesn’t move, it’s usually a stripped drive gear, a failed capacitor or a disconnected trolley. When the door starts down and reverses, it’s almost always the safety sensors — frost heave in the slab and bumped photo-eyes knock them out of line every winter. We repair openers of every brand and only recommend a new opener when the old one isn’t worth fixing.

(403) 667-9676

Dents, hail and worn-out doors

Calgary’s June-to-August hail season dents steel panels, and backing into a door bends sections and tracks. Single sections can often be replaced; when a door is more than about 20 years old, uninsulated, or the panels are discontinued, a new insulated door usually costs less over its life and makes the garage noticeably warmer.

(403) 667-9676

When to call a technician (and what to check yourself)

You can safely check the remote battery, make sure the lock bar isn’t engaged, wipe the photo-eye lenses and confirm both sensor lights are solid. Anything involving springs, cables, drums or bottom brackets is under extreme tension and should be left to a technician — those parts cause serious injuries every year. If the door is stuck open or your car is trapped, call us for same-day emergency repair.

How to make your garage door last longer in this climate

  • Book a tune-up every fall: springs re-tensioned, rollers and hinges lubricated, balance and auto-reverse tested.
  • Chip ice away from the bottom seal instead of letting the opener rip the door free.
  • Upgrade to high-cycle springs if you open the door more than four times a day.
  • Replace a cracked bottom weatherstrip — it keeps snow, meltwater and mice out.

FAQ

Garage Door Repair Questions Calgary Homeowners Ask

How much does garage door repair cost in Calgary?

Most garage door repairs in Calgary cost between $180 and $400. At TrueFix a single torsion spring replacement is $280 (double: $480), cable replacement and adjustment is $240, opener repair is $180 plus parts, and a full tune-up is $149. There is no call-out fee, and you get a flat price before any work starts. See the full price list.

Do you offer same-day garage door repair?

Yes. We run trucks across all four Calgary quadrants seven days a week, 8 am to 8 pm, and most customers see a technician within 1–2 hours of calling. Because every truck carries springs, cables, rollers, hinges and opener parts, the majority of repairs are finished on the first visit.

Is it safe to open my garage door with a broken spring?

No. The spring carries almost the full weight of the door — often 70 to 150 kg on a double door. With a broken spring the door can drop without warning, and forcing it with the opener can strip the opener’s gear or bend the top section. Leave it closed, unplug the opener and call for spring repair.

Why do garage door springs break so often in Calgary?

Standard builder springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles — roughly 7 to 10 years of normal use. Calgary’s Chinook swings and −30 °C cold snaps make steel more brittle and add load at start-up, so failures cluster in cold weather. Springs that were sized wrong for the door weight also fail early. We size each spring to your actual door and offer high-cycle upgrades.

Do you charge a service call or trip fee?

No. There is no call-out fee and no travel surcharge anywhere in Calgary, Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, Chestermere, Strathmore, High River or the other towns we serve. You only pay for the repair you approve.

What garage door and opener brands do you repair?

All of them. We service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Ryobi, Marantec, Sommer, Skylink and Overhead Door openers, and doors by Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Garaga, Steel-Craft and others — including older discontinued models.

Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?

If the opener is under about 10 years old, a repair (gear and sprocket, logic board, capacitor or sensors) is usually the better value. Past 15 years, parts get scarce and a new opener with battery backup and app control often makes more sense. We give you both prices and an honest recommendation. Read more on opener repair.

Is your work guaranteed?

Yes. Every repair comes with a written warranty on the parts we supply and on our labour, and every completed service includes a free door tune-up. Details are on our warranty page.

How often should a garage door be serviced?

Once a year is the right interval for most Calgary homes — ideally in fall before the first cold snap. A tune-up includes spring adjustment and lubrication, a cable inspection and balance test, opener and safety-reverse checks, and track alignment. It’s $149, or included with a TrueCare membership.

Do you repair commercial garage doors?

Yes — sectional overhead doors for shops, warehouses, small businesses and condo parkades. See commercial garage door repair.
