Diagnosis

Signs your safety sensors need attention

The two photo-eyes mounted low on either side of the door send an invisible beam across the opening. If the opener cannot see that beam, it will not close the door, or it reverses as soon as the door starts down. That is a safety feature doing its job, but it also means a small sensor fault can leave your garage stuck open. Common signs include:

  • The door starts to close, then reverses back up
  • The door only closes while you hold the wall button down
  • The opener lights blink or flash and the door refuses to close
  • The door reverses before it reaches the floor
  • Trouble started after frost heave, a snowbank or a bin bumped a sensor bracket
  • The door won't close on sunny days when low sun shines into a sensor

Sensor problems we fix

Most sensor faults come down to alignment, dirt, wiring or a failed unit. In Calgary, frost heave in the slab, snow and ice piled against a sensor and low winter sun are frequent culprits. We carry sensors and wiring on the truck, so most repairs are finished in one visit.

Photo-eye alignment

Brackets knocked out of line by frost heave, bins, bikes or the car are reset so both sensors face each other squarely. We clean the lenses and check for anything blocking the beam, including low sun hitting the receiving eye.

Sensor replacement

When a sensor has failed or is damaged, we replace it with a compatible unit, align the pair and confirm the opener recognizes them before we leave.

Chewed, pinched, corroded or loose low-voltage wires are repaired or replaced, and bent or loose brackets are straightened or swapped so the sensors stay put.

When it's the opener, not the sensor

Not every door that refuses to close has a sensor problem. If the sensors are clean and aligned but the fault keeps coming back, the opener itself may be the cause: a logic board damaged by a power surge, drifted force or limit settings, or a failing receiver. A broken spring or slipped cable can also make the opener lift a few centimetres and reverse.

Why won't my garage door close but the opener runs?
The most common cause is the photo-eyes: dirty lenses, misalignment or something blocking the beam. If the door closes while you hold the wall button but not with the remote, the opener has lost the sensor signal. Force or limit settings and track problems can also stop it closing.
Can you realign sensors the same day?

Why does my opener light blink and the door reverse?
