Panel & Hinge Repair
What’s included, how fast we respond and what it costs — before we ever pick up a wrench.
Cracked or bent hinges are replaced with the correct numbered hinge for each joint, so the door seals tight when closed. Hinges are carried on the truck.
Screws that have pulled out of thin steel stiles are re-anchored with reinforcement so the hinge holds again. We check why it loosened, usually balance or a worn roller.
The adjustable top roller brackets set how tightly the top section closes against the weatherstrip. We reset or replace them to stop gaps and rubbing.
A dented, creased or cracked section replaced with a matching panel from your door’s manufacturer. The door is made safe while the section is on order.
A reinforcing strut added where the opener arm attaches, stopping a top section from bowing or cracking along the hinge line.
We identify the make and model, check whether matching sections exist and give you a written quote with photos for your insurer.

How it works
Diagnosis
We replace it with the correct numbered hinge, check the roller it carries, and look for the binding or imbalance that cracked it.
The screw holes have stripped out of the stile. We reinforce the stile and re-anchor the hinge so it cannot pull loose again.
We add a reinforcing strut, replace the section if it has cracked, and check spring balance so the opener is not pushing dead weight.
The top fixtures need adjusting so the top section closes snugly against the weatherstrip. We reset them and check the hinges below.
We secure the door, check the rollers, bracket and cables for impact damage, and quote a matching section.
We assess and photograph the damage for your insurer and recommend section replacement or a new door before rust can start.
Buyer’s guide
Calgary’s hail season runs roughly June to August, and a single storm can leave a steel garage door covered in dents. Light pocking is cosmetic, but deeper dents can crack the paint, letting rust start, and heavy hail can crease the steel skin so the section no longer seals properly. Many homeowners deal with hail damage through their home insurance; we can assess the door and provide a written quote with photos for your adjuster. See our post on repairs, warranty and insurance.
Backing out before the door is fully up, or a teenager learning to judge the parking spot, usually damages the bottom one or two sections. Beyond the dent, the impact often pushes rollers out of the track and stresses hinges and the bottom bracket, so we check the whole door, not just the panel you can see.
The opener arm attaches to the top section. If the door was never reinforced there, or if the opener has been pushing against a door with a broken spring, the top section bends inward, sometimes cracking along the hinge line. This is common on lighter non-insulated doors, and on doors where an opener was added later without a reinforcing strut.
There is no point paying for a section if the rest of the door is tired, and no point buying a new door when a single section will do. Here is how we think it through with you:
| Situation | Usually the best option |
|---|---|
| Minor dent, steel not creased, door runs fine | Leave it, or straighten and add a strut if the section flexes |
| Top section bowed from the opener | Reinforcing strut, plus a new section if it is cracked |
| One or two sections creased or cracked, door otherwise sound | Replace those sections, if matching panels are available |
| Hail damage across the whole door | New door is often simpler, especially if insurance is involved |
| Older door, panels discontinued, rusted or several sections damaged | New garage door |
Sections are not universal. A replacement has to match the manufacturer, model, height, thickness, embossing pattern, colour and insulation of your existing door, or it will look wrong and may not hinge correctly. That is the single biggest factor in the decision.
We work with doors from Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Garaga, Steel-Craft and others. On a newer door, the manufacturer’s label, usually on the inside edge of a section or near the end stile, gives us the model so we can order an exact match. We take measurements and photos on the first visit and confirm availability before you commit.
On older doors the panel design may be discontinued. In that case we will tell you so instead of fitting something that is “close enough.” Sometimes the solution is to swap the damaged section to a less visible position; sometimes it is a new door. Colour can also be an issue: even an exact panel in the same colour can look brighter next to a door that has faded in years of Alberta sun.
Replacing a section is not just unbolting a panel. The bottom section carries the bottom brackets and lift cables, which are under spring tension, so the springs are unwound before it is removed. Upper sections carry hinges and rollers that need to line up exactly with the sections around them. After the new section is in, we re-tension the springs, rebalance the door, and test the opener’s force and reverse settings, because a door that weighs slightly more or less than before needs those reset.
This is also when we check rollers, hinges, cables and the track for damage from the original impact. If the door came out of the track, see off-track repair; if a cable was stretched, see cable repair.
Hinges are the small steel brackets that join each section to the next and, at the ends of the door, hold the rollers. A typical double door has a dozen or more of them, and each one flexes every time the door rolls from vertical to horizontal. After thousands of cycles, and especially on a door that has been running out of balance, hinges crack, bend or work loose. Because a hinge also carries a roller, one failed end hinge can let a section tip away from the track and start the chain of events that ends with a door off its tracks.
Look along the inside of the door with it closed. A cracked hinge usually shows a hairline break across the leaf or a leaf that has bent away from the section, and the roller it carries may sit at a different angle from its neighbours. You may also hear a new pop or click at the same point in each cycle. We carry hinges on the truck and replace cracked ones on the spot, along with any roller that has worn in the process.
End hinges are not all the same. They are numbered, usually #1 through #4 on residential doors, and each higher number holds its roller a little further out from the door. The bottom joint uses the lowest number and each joint above it steps up, so as the door closes, the sections draw in tight against the weatherstrip on the jamb instead of rubbing it or leaving a gap. Centre hinges, which carry no roller, are normally #1. Fit the wrong number at one joint and that section will bind, scrape or let in a draft, so we always replace like for like.
The top section does not use a hinge for its rollers. It uses an adjustable top fixture (a top roller bracket) that lets us set how firmly the top of the door closes against the stop. When a top fixture is loose or set wrong, you see daylight across the top of the door or hear it rubbing as it closes. A careful adjustment, or a new fixture if the old one is bent, fixes it.
Hinge screws thread into the steel end stiles and centre stiles of each section. On lighter, non-insulated doors the steel is thin, and years of vibration let the screws spin in their holes until the hinge pulls loose. Simply fitting a bigger screw only buys a little time. We re-anchor the hinge with proper stile reinforcement so it holds again, and check the spring balance and rollers, because a heavy or binding door is usually what pulled the screws out in the first place.
If a summer storm has just hammered your neighbourhood, a few steps make the repair and any insurance claim easier:
Do not leave chipped paint for long. Once bare steel is exposed, rust can start, and rust spreading from a dent is much harder to fix than the dent itself. If your door has seen several hail seasons and is looking tired overall, it may be the right time to compare section replacement with a new insulated door.
If a car has just hit your door and it will not close, call us for same-day emergency service. Ordered panels take time to arrive, but we can almost always get the door closed and secure on the first visit so your home is not left open while you wait. Do not run the opener on a door with a bent section or rollers out of the track. We cover the whole city and nearby towns, including the NW and SE, and every repair carries our written warranty on parts and labour.

FAQ
Yes, if a matching section is still available for your door’s make, model, size, pattern and colour. We identify the model from the door’s label, confirm availability, and quote it before ordering. If the panel is discontinued, we will tell you.
It depends on the door’s manufacturer, size, insulation and which section is damaged, so we quote after seeing the door. There is no call-out fee for the assessment. If several sections are damaged, we will compare the cost against a new door for you.
Replacing one section is usually cheaper than a new door. Once two or more sections are damaged, the door is older, or matching panels are discontinued, a new door often makes more sense and looks better.
Many policies do, but coverage depends on your policy and deductible. We can assess the damage and give you a written quote with photos to send to your insurer. Check with your provider before booking the work.
The opener arm pushes and pulls on the top section. Without a reinforcing strut, or if the door is heavy because a spring has weakened, the section bows and can crack. We add a strut and check the spring balance.
Shallow dents that have not creased the steel can often be left alone or improved, and the section can be reinforced. Creased, cracked or split sections should be replaced, because they weaken the door and can affect how it runs.
Yes, in most cases. We carry the common numbered hinges and rollers on the truck and replace a cracked hinge on the first visit. We also check the balance and rollers, since a heavy or binding door is often what cracked it.
Not for long. A cracked end hinge can let a roller leave the track or a section fold outward as the door moves. Limit use, keep clear of the door while it runs, and book a repair. Never loosen the bottom brackets at the lower corners yourself, as they are under spring tension.
It depends on the manufacturer and model. We confirm the expected timing when we order and make the door safe in the meantime if it was damaged.
